Goodyear congratulates the University of Wisconsin-Madison for winning the 2007 FSAE competition, as well as the University of Western Australia (2nd), Graz University of Technology (3rd), and the University of Cincinnati (4th); congratulations in the 2007 FSAE West event to Texas A&M (1st), Kansas (2nd), Purdue (4th), and Toledo (5th).

OUR NEW FSAE TIRE
Goodyear is proud to offer a new tire specifically designed for FSAE applications. With a new compound and a computer-optimized mold shape for maximum footprint efficiency this is our best offering to date. An experimental version of this tire was run in 2006 by several universities with outstanding results, and has become our new standard offering.

IMPORTANT TIRE INFORMATION - PLEASE READ

Setup
The new D2692 and D2691 tire is a different construction than previous generations and a direct-swap replacement may not yield optimum results without also adjusting vehicle alignment and tire inflation. A recommended starting point is -1° to -1.5° camber and 10-11 psi cold inflation with a target of 12-13 psi hot inflation; lightweight cars will generally be 1-2 psi lower. After several laps, measure tread temperature across the face of the tire and adjust settings as needed to achieve a relatively uniform distribution.

Break-in procedure
Scuffing tires prior to racing is recommended as it breaks in the carcass of the tire and improves the overall consistency of the tread compound, extending the life of the tire. If a new sticker set of tires is run too hard before the tread compound heats up, the tread could tear or grain. For a proper break-in tires should be brought up to temperature slowly during the scuffing procedure; with tires at nominal pressure run a circuit or large figure-eight, starting at a reduced pace and gradually increasing. Once the tires warm up and the grip level increases, run a cool down lap and then stop and allow the tires to cool to ambient. It is recommended that tires be scuffed before coming to competition as the available practice areas typically aren't large enough to properly scuff a set of tires.

Mounting
For the new D2692 and D2691 tire: the asymmetric construction is optimized to run in a particular configuration. The outside of the tire should be stamped 'Mount this side out'. Follow this recommendation regardless of the tire placement on the vehicle.

For all other FSAE tires: to minimize the chance of tearing the tread splice (a cosmetic-only flaw) one must orient the tires with regard to front braking torque or rear drive torque. To do so, locate the serial number which is stamped in the sidewall on only one side of the tire. Tires should be mounted on the rims such that the serial numbers face to the left on the front axle and to the right on the rear axle, i.e.

LF: serial number to the outside of the car
RF: serial number to the inside of the car
RR: serial number to the outside of the car
LR: serial number to the inside of the car

After tires have been scuffed and run for awhile, used tires may then be moved to different positions on the car without regard to orientation.

Storage
Tires should not be stored in high temperature areas, in direct sunlight, around welding areas, or near electric motors. Exposure to ultra-violet light and ozone can lead to loss in performance of tread compounds. For long term storage tires should be bagged and kept in a cool, dry area.

Formula SAE Tire Databook
The information previously provided here was for an outdated product line. Most teams now get their tire data through the FSAE Tire Test Consortium.

SPONSORSHIP
Goodyear is proud to support Formula SAE activities worldwide. To that end a limited number of sponsorships are available for select participants. If your team is interested in sponsorship, please send a detailed proposal (in .pdf format) to Formula_SAE@goodyear.com.

CAREERS
Goodyear places great value on the experience students gain through SAE competitions. We are aware of and understand the time, effort, and dedication it takes to build one of these vehicles and are appreciative of the experience it provides the engineers of tomorrow.
